A Preliminary Investigation of Factors Impacting Diversity in Swimming
StructureCouncil for Aquatic Professionals
DescriptionSwimming is a low-impact, lifelong fitness-building activity that seems to be an underrepresented fitness choice for some minority populations. The focus of this presentation is to share preliminary research findings of a mixed-method study examining factors that impact diversity in swimming. Surveys and open-ended interviews were used to identify reasons why minorities choose not to participate in swimming for either recreational or competitive purposes. You will learn ways to combat misconceptions that some minorities have about the availability and difficulties thought to be inherent in the sport of swimming as well as strategies for promoting diversity throughout the sport.
