Exploring Culturally-Relevant Pedagogies for a Diverse Community of Learners |
Structure | |
Description | While sensitivity to the needs of a diverse community of learners is often identified as a valued aspect of teacher education, it is not always clear how an appreciation for, or exposure to, issues of diversity translate into a teaching practice that is more culturally sensitive. This session will describe the ways in which an outdoor/adventure course evolved from a hard-skill orientation to an experiential learning opportunity in teacher preparation that focused on the development of a culturally-relevant pedagogy for work with Native American children, especially girls. |
