Description | This presentation investigates socializtion and challenges coaching female athletes at various stages. This session explores issues coaching from a novice perspective. Analysis of past and present “teaching/coaching” practices will be examined. Discussion will focus on: socialization, teacher/coach roles, sexual harassment, assault (and ways to protect oneself), homophobia, and player/coach “crushes”. Questions guiding the presentation: Are female coaches socialized by mentors? Are female athletes a different breed? Are female athletes much different than males? Why are female coaches declining in numbers? Is there a feminist perspective when coaching females? First-hand experiences and interviews of women in dual roles will be presented. | |
