WHOSE SPORT IS IT ANYWAY? – The Effects Negatively Pushy Parents Have on Talented Children
StructureChildren, Youth and Families Council
DescriptionChildren who display athletic talent at an early age have parents who fall into one of three categories; nurturing, neglectful, and negatively pushy. Of those three types, the negatively pushy parents run the greatest risk of causing long-term harm, either physical or psychological, to their talented offspring. Most programs developed by various youth sport organizations, although a step in the right direction, are geared toward socialization: modifying boorish parental behavior during practices and games/matches/meets. Intervention programs that identify negatively pushy parents, incorporating strategies to help parents and their talented children need to be developed and implemented.
