Phenomenological Choreographic Research: Composing Stories
Debra Knapp, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM

Phenomenology is both a philosophy and a mode of inquiry. A phenomenological study describes the perceived meaning of a lived experience. Researching by using documents from historical figures of people of specific interest is one way to create a body of work that gives perspective and adds knowledge of a peoples' way of life. In addition to creating the movement script, text scores can be created from writings, journals, and newspaper articles. This presentation will address methodologies used in composing the stories that underlie phenomenological choreographic research.
